Old Forge Triathlon – 8/18/13
presented by Enchanted Forest Water Safari

Come and join us for the second Old Forge Triathlon presented by Enchanted Forest Water Safari! This intermediate distance triathlon features a 1000m swim, 22-mile bike, and a 4-mile run. The race will begin at 8am.

The race distance was set for several logistical reasons.  Given the roads around the area, it is nearly impossible to get a sprint (12 mile) or Olympic (24.8 mile) distance for the bike. One loop around the lake is scenic and only 22 miles.  To adjust for a different bike distance, we adjusted the swim to be an “intermediate” intermediate race.  We think you will love the scenic swim, bike, and run courses.  The swim course is even spectator friendly!

All athletes will receive
•Complimentary entry to Enchanted Forest Water Safari
•Technical T-shirt
•Quality Age Group and overall awards
•Food and beverage immediately following the race

    • Ryan Orilio
      April 21, 2013

Hi Mary, from the water to the bikes is approx 50 feet, and it is almost all grass.

Hi Ryan, how does a person register as part of a team for the tri?

    • Ryan Orilio
      April 29, 2013

Hi Diane. Click on the link to register at the top of the page. Then there should be a link in the first paragraph of text to download the relay application. The relay application is the same for all of the races. Hope to see you at a race!

What direction is the bike route. I’ve ridden it many times and it is verrry different depending if you are starting on Rt 28 to Inlet or South road first. Thanks.

      Mark,

The bike starts at the pond, goes north on 28 to Inlet and back on South Shore Rd. It will remain as last year, clockwise. It’s great since there’s not crossing lanes of traffic and only one turn in Inlet. Pretty easy!

what if someone has already signed up but has decided to do it as a relay? Can we fill out the relay form and include the difference in $

      Kristin,

Send me a direct email at atcendurance@gmail.com and we can take care of that. There are a few things I have to do on my end, but we can certainly take care of it.

      Thanks for coming!

    Hi, Mike -
Is the $10 licensing fee per relay team vs. per person on a team?
Also, I have a CDTC…. code. How might I apply that when registering?
    Thanks!
    Chris

  8. Michael
    May 21, 2013

    Chris,

Yes, that fee is per person per team. So if three teammates are not members it would be $30. As for the CDTC, just write the code on the paper app and take $10 off the fee.

    Thanks for signing up!

Do you have a “Aqua Bike” entry…just the Swim and Bike?

    • Ryan Orilio
      June 12, 2013

Sorry Joanne, not this year. But it is something we’ll keep in mind for the future.

If you’re interested but not a confident runner, you could always participate as a relay team.

Hi I am not familiar with the course (both the bike and run) are the flat or hilly ?

    • Mike
      June 24, 2013

      Vinny,

A complete map with an elevation profile is coming, but here is a brief synopsis. The bike is uphill for the first 1.5-2 miles. Then you are pretty much facing some small rollers and flat sections the rest of the way. All in all, it’s a fairly quick ride, especially since it’s in the middle of the Adirondacks. The run is very flat. One small hill (if you would call it that) but overall a very fast four miles.

Look for a better version of the map coming later this week.

      Thanks!

      Mike

Is there a cap for the number of participants?
How many are registered so far?

    • Mike
      June 24, 2013

      Hello Ellen,

Sorry for the delay in getting this to you. I’ve been getting a lot of traffic on the email, not necessarily right here. I’ll check it more frequently. As for your question, we don’t plan on capping the race this year, but we just crossed the 150 mark this week for registrations. Last year, 196 total registered, so we are well ahead of 2012 levels.

      Hope to see you there!

What is the water temp ? Is a full sleeve wet suit acceptable ?

    • Mike
      June 24, 2013

      Anthony,

As in the other post, I apologize for not getting this sooner for you. Water temperature is usually in the low to mid 70s this time of year in Old Forge. As you know, especially if you are from Upstate NY, there are no guarantees with our weather, so it can certainly change in an instant. Being a USAT sanctioned event, we follow their rules and guidelines for wetsuits. The cut off for them is 78 degrees, so we should be ok. Even if it’s past 78, you can still wear a suit, you just are not eligible for awards. Once it gets past 82, no suit of any kind is allowed.

Hope this helps and we hope to see you there!

      Mike

        July 24, 2013

Mike the wetsuit I have is thicker than the sanctioned 5 mm. Is this acceptable ? I am okay with not receiving any awards.

    Mike,
Great lay out! Can not wait to get up there for vacation the week prior. I love that run, very flat. I thought you would take it up to Nicks lake and back, but I’m OK with the flatter run, especially after pounding those hills.
Question: will there be wave starts since so many participates for the one race distance?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    • Mike
      July 31, 2013

Glad to hear you like the course. The run is super fast as you mention. Last year, we had three waves for the swim start and will most likely be doing the same this year. We don’t make it final until race week when we have a good grip on the numbers. We just passed 200, which is already more than we had last year! We’re excited!

Are there a recommended list of hotels or motels close to the race site?

    • Mike
      July 31, 2013

      John,

We do partner with the Water’s Edge Inn and Enchanted Forest so I would try them first. They are about 1/4 mile from the race start and right across from the water park. Hotels do fill up quickly there however, so you may have to do a hotels.com search or similar type of travel search engine.

Thanks a lot and see you there!

Is it possible for a person to compete as an individual(doing all 3 events) and also be a member of a relay(doing 1 event)? I am planning on doing the entire tri, but my family is planning on a relay team and they lost their swimmer. I do not mind paying the extra money.

    • Mike
      July 31, 2013

      Mandy,

I may have a swimmer for you. He’s a former D1 swimmer so he’d get you in good position. If I had you do both, that may be difficult since the other relay members wouldn’t necessarily be starting at the same time as you. It would also complicate matters with timing and scoring. Let me know if you want me to recruit a swimmer for you. Email me at atcendurance@gmail.com for more details.

      Thanks,

      Mike

Can you have a relay team of two people? I plan on doing the biking and running and my partner will be doing the swimming section.

    • Mike
      July 31, 2013

Two person relay teams are allowed, however all relays score in the same division for awards purposes.

Thanks a lot and see you there!

200! Ye haw! Finally some endurance triathletes! My last 2 tri’s in central NY have been the Olympic distance and there were 45 and 41 for the Olympic and 125 and 140 for the Sprints respectively. Also, thanks for the 1 distance so it will feel like a real race. Hollywood Hills here we come!

I enjoyed the race last year and just signed up for 2013 today. I was not asked to buy, or charged for, a USAT one-day membership. Is this something I should expect to pay for on race day?

    • Mike
      July 31, 2013

      Dale,

We actually did change our policy on that this year. Having the option to pay online made it difficult for our registration staff to determine who did and did not pay. Many athletes sign up months in advance and couldn’t remember if they paid or not. Then we had to look them up, tell them they didn’t pay and then they didn’t have any cash on them…oh MY! So we just decided to make everyone pay race weekend. It also gives folks a chance to sign up for a USAT yearly membership between the time they sign up and actually race. So far, it seems to keep the registration lines moving more smoothly.

Thanks for signing up and see you in a few weeks!

When and where is packet pick up and bike racking? Is there a required bike inspection before the 18th? Are there starting waves for the swim? Should I expect an email with details?

  23. Mike
    August 4, 2013

    Linda,

Thanks for writing. Look for the athlete guide in your email inbox and on the Old Forge page by Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. We will have a Friday pick up in the New Hartford area, a Saturday packet pick up at Calypso’s Cove in Old Forge as well as the chance to get your packet race morning. We don’t have any bike inspections and will open transition on Sunday morning at 6 am. Look for three wave starts with about 75 athletes per wave. Hope that helps!

Hi! I just found out about this triathlon and I will happen to be in Old Forge on a family vacation that weekend! I would love to participate but I don’t think I will be able to do the 1000M swim. Is it possible to just do the bike and run or is there anyway I find someone to do the swim as part of a team?

What great timing! I just may have a swimmer that would love to swim for you. He’s pretty good too! Email me directly at atcendurance@gmail.com and I can get you more details.

Hi, for my team relay I am planning on doing the swim, and registered a biker and a runner. Our runner cannot make it to the tri, so if I want to do the run and the swim and use the same biker who should I inform? Should I tell someone at relay packet pickup or call or something?

    • Ryan Orilio

Emily, Let us know when you pick up your packet and we will get everything changed. No worries!

  28. Mike
    August 14, 2013

    Hello Pam,

We don’t typically publish a registration list. We have 21 relay teams competing and 240 individuals as of today. Should be a great day for a race too. 75 and sunny!

See you in a few days!

Was there a lost and found collection? I am pretty sure I left my running shoes in the transition area!

  35. Mike
    August 27, 2013

Sorry for the delay everyone! Was on a family vacation after the race. To answer your questions, USAT results get submitted within 2 weeks from the event. It then usually takes a few weeks for USAT to process and post. I would say maybe a few weeks from today. I do believe I have some running shoes in my garage. I am not home for a few more days, but if you email me a description at atcendurance@gmail.com, I can ship them when I return.

Thanks everyone for coming and talking up the race! Your referrals mean the most to our continued growth and ability to bring a top notch event!

    Mike,
Glad you get to take some time for yourself. You guys put on a great race series. Wish it was on Saturday instead of Sunday though.
I noticed that USAT still had not recieved the Delta Lake tri results yet so I hope it won’t take to long.
Hope to be there next year!
